When I prepared my two-volume New York Central Power Along the Hudson in 2004 as a tribute to my dear friend the late Edward L. May, 1 had no idea that the effort would blossom into an eight-book project featuring 639 photographs from Ed's collection, many of which were taken by Ed himself, and almost all of which were personally printed by me in the good old-fashioned, wet darkroom manner.
But so it has, and this is the last book in a series that has covered the use of steam power across the sprawling New York Central System from St. Louis to Boston in the best way that I could in keeping with my objective of using only photos from Ed May's collection. This was an attempt to say "thank you" to Ed for having entrusted me with his collection a few years before his death, and it fulfilled a promise that I made to myself to make the best of the images in his collection available for others to enjoy.
