This is an antique brass Judenstern Sabbath hanging oil lamp.
There is no hanging adjustable ratchet hook at the top.
From what I understand, this could date from the 18th or 19th centuries. Please use your judgment.
From top to bottom it measures 16 1/2 inches tall (41.9 cm). It measures 8 1/2 inches wide at the reservoir (21.6 cm).
I did some preliminary research and found that Judenstern means Jewish star in German. These types of pieces were used before candles or electric lighting in Jewish homes. Some people say they are German though some people say they are Italian.
I found some other examples of these, but none of them had the four balls attached near the top. I thought this one was fairly unique.
It has a six pointed star shaped oil reservoir and used wicks. There is a drip bowl at the bottom.
For some reason, this has a piece of fabric covered wire going through it and leading out into three of the openings where the oil would sit. I have taken some close-ups of this.
There are some scattered scratches and possible pitting to the surface, oxidation and general age related wear. It’s a very solid and sturdy piece.
It weighs a touch over 5 pounds (2.274 kg).
