Batman #423 has a seemingly simple story. Two cops are just getting off duty after a long night shift. They meet up at a diner and discuss their encounters with Batman as they drink their coffee, one telling of the dark knight trying to talk down a possible jumper and the other of Batman dealing with a hostage crisis. Their conversation is overheard by a third cop, who tells his own tale of meeting the Bat.
These three encounters as told by Jim Starlin and brought to the page by Dave Cockrum and Mike DeCarlo show with a gritty realism the Gotham City's protector from all sides.
