King Alfred the Great (reigned 871–899) is remembered as one of the greatest monarchs in British history and the only English king to be given the title "the Great." Ruling during one of the darkest periods of the Anglo-Saxon age, Alfred successfully defended the Kingdom of Wessex against repeated Viking invasions, ensuring that Anglo-Saxon England survived. His decisive victory over Guthrum at the Battle of Edington led to the Treaty of Wedmore, securing peace and establishing the boundaries between Wessex and the Danelaw.
Alfred was far more than a warrior king. He transformed Wessex through sweeping military, legal and educational reforms, creating a network of fortified burhs to defend his kingdom, reorganising the army, strengthening the navy and promoting justice. Believing that education was essential for good government, Alfred encouraged the translation of important Latin works into Old English and fostered learning throughout his kingdom. His reforms laid the foundations for the eventual unification of England under his descendants.
Alfred married Ealhswith, with whom he had several children, including Edward the Elder, who succeeded him, and Æthelflæd, one of the most celebrated female rulers of the Anglo-Saxon period. Together, Alfred's family continued his vision of reclaiming England from Viking rule, culminating in the reign of his grandson, King Æthelstan, the first recognised King of all England.
