For sale is pcgs ms66fs 1939 R38 nickel. It is the REAL deal and truly a Rev of 38 coin. The reverse of 1938 has slightly thicker "wavy" steps compared with the reverse of 1940 which is thinner more defined steps. Up until about 2004 PCGS did not distinguish between the two. The 66fs pop was about 80 with about 12 or 15 in 67fs and none higher. Most of the coins in both those pops were the far easier reverse of 1940. Then pcgs started designating between the two and made a HUGE mistake assigning the old coin number to reverse of 38, ie all previously graded coins would ring up as reverse of 1938 even though most of those were reverse of 1940. Some of the most prominent pcgs registry sets have even CHEATED putting such a reverse of 1940 coin in their reverse of 1938 registry slot. Even recently on another auction site such a undesignated R40 coin, pcgs ms66fs, sold for $873. One auction of a ms66fs R38 was for $2364! I believe the real pop of this coin is likely 10-20 coins and the real ms67fs pop is also not much more than about 10. This is not an easy coin to find!
