Early Bell Model 47 bare-airframe structural test setup photograph

circa 1945–1946 • Approximately 8 x 10 Inches

About The Photograph

Offered here is a detailed archive image showing Early Bell Model 47 bare-airframe structural test setup photograph. The photograph shows an uncovered Bell Model 47-family tubular airframe in a Bell engineering laboratory, surrounded by a load frame, gauges, wiring, weights and test equipment. Fabric or padded coverings are wrapped around portions of the structure. There is no visible test placard or reverse caption, so the exact loading sequence is unconfirmed; the scene is most consistent with static-load or structural-development testing of an early Model 47 airframe.

Why This Bell Image Matters

Bell’s first production helicopter used a welded tubular-steel center structure and open truss tail boom. Before certification and production, Bell had to demonstrate that the airframe, landing gear and attachment points could withstand operational and design loads. The gauges and loading frame visible here represent the hands-on, pre-computer engineering methods used during the birth of the commercial helicopter industry. This image pairs particularly well with the dated Model 47B 170-percent fuselage test in Item03.

Archive Provenance

From the Jeffrey C. Evans Helicopter Archive Estate. Jeffrey C. Evans (1945–2025) was a respected helicopter historian, researcher, photographer, and archive collector whose work helped preserve important rotorcraft history. He was a longtime member of the Vertical Flight Society and Vertical Aviation International, and he co-authored The Bell 47 Helicopter Story. This piece was preserved within his California aviation archive, giving it meaningful collector provenance and a direct connection to decades of helicopter research.
