OBJECT// Antique Japanese carved very unusual netsuke of a Chinese trader with a Dutch merchants dog, foreigner netsukes were highly popular to Japanese carvers as Japan was quite a closed society so people were highly curious of foreigners and netsuke carvers used this to their advantage and depicted various foreigners including the Chinese, Mongolians and famously the Dutch traders, this particular piece is really quite rare due to the fact it shows two foreign subjects, the first being a Chinese merchant shown standing in traditional Chinese costume and hair style but secondly he is holding by its lead a Dutch merchants Dog, this ive never seen before on a Netsuke and is possibly unique, Dutch dogs in form are unique and became a popular netsuke subject in Japan with the famous carver Tomotada in Kyoto doing some superb examples. Like all good quality netsuke this piece is finely carved from every angle including the bottom. Dating from the 18th century, Edo period object. Superb colour and patina, serious collectors object.
