About the Player

Bruce Sutter was on the fringes of professional baseball — a struggling minor leaguer with an injured arm — until he learned the split-fingered fastball from Cubs minor league pitching coach Fred Martin in 1973. What appeared to be an ordinary fastball suddenly dove through the strike zone as it reached the plate, and within just a few years Sutter was one of the game’s elite relief pitchers. 

By 1977 — the year of this card — he was already entrenched as the Cubs’ closer, finishing with 31 saves and earning the first of six All-Star Game invitations.  He went on to win the 1979 NL Cy Young Award, finished his career with a 2.83 ERA and 300 saves, and became a 1982 World Series champion with the Cardinals. 

Sutter was the first Major League pitcher elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame without ever starting a single game.  He passed away in October 2022 at age 69, making this rookie card a lasting tribute to a true baseball pioneer.
