The standout piece of this collection: a vintage comb-bound Bell Helicopter Corporation sales brochure for "the Model 47J Ranger." The cover photo is striking — a red-and-white 47J Ranger banking through a clear blue sky, pilot visible at the controls, registration markings on the tail boom. Inside, period performance specifications and a full Bell sales-office directory (Burbank, Buffalo, Fort Worth, and Washington D.C.) round out this genuinely early piece of commercial helicopter sales history.
Jeffrey C. Evans (1945–2025) was a respected helicopter historian, researcher, and photographer based in Southern California, and a long-term member of both the Vertical Flight Society and Vertical Aviation International. He co-authored The Bell 47 Helicopter Story: Birth of the Commercial & Military Helicopter Industry with Robert S. Petite — a major reference work on this very aircraft family. Vertical Magazine recognized him as a longtime contributor whose historical photographs and documents were used in the magazine's "Vertical Rewind" features.
This brochure was acquired as part of a large group of helicopter photographs, slides, manuals, technical documents, and aviation archive material purchased from Evans's California estate in 2026.
Announced in 1956, the Bell 47J Ranger replaced the exposed-framework look of earlier Bell 47 variants with a fully enclosed, executive-style cabin — pilot up front, passengers seated behind, marketed squarely at business, government, and utility customers. The Bell 47 family itself holds a singular place in aviation history: it was the first helicopter certified for civilian use in the United States in 1946, and it went on to define medevac, training, agricultural, police, and television/news flying for decades. Brochures from this exact period capture Bell's earliest pitch to convince American business that a helicopter belonged on the executive's travel list.
