Be assured that all card readers are identical under the hood and interchangeable between banks, the only differences are cosmetic and in what the bank chooses to send with their card reader. A card reader that was not issued by your bank WILL work seamlessly with all cards provided by your bank.
BARCLAYS chooses to issue PINSENTRY Card readers that are of an older design than those issued by NatWest / Nationwide and they feel chunkier in the hand. They take 4 X LR44 batteries, and come with an instruction leaflet, but no letter from the bank.
The NATWEST / RBS / ULSTER Bank reader (which works with Barclays cards) are a slimmer, more modern design and are made by security company Thales; they have no branding. On delivery the batteries are isolated by a plastic strip (pull it off before first use). They take 2 X CR2032 batteries. No instruction leaflet is supplied but they do come with a letter of authenticity from the bank. The NATIONWIDE reader is identical to that issued by NatWest except it has Nationwide branding on the back and it comes with Nationwide operating instructions and a card covering how to change the battery, but no bank letter.
