The Bible in Art: Twenty Centuries of Famous Bible Paintings, edited with commentary by Clifton Harby (pen name of Clifton Harby Levy). Published by Garden City Publishing Co., New York; copyright 1936 (Covici-Friede). A large illustrated art volume surveying twenty centuries of biblical painting, with full-page color plate reproductions (Fra Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Dürer, El Greco, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Giotto, and more) plus hundreds of black-and-white reproductions and an index. 390 pages.
Condition — vintage, please view all photos:
Hardcover in tan/golden cloth with a black-and-gilt spine label. Honest wear consistent with age: the tan cloth covers are soiled and tanned/darkened, with rubbing and a small mark to the front board; the gilt spine label shows fraying at the edges. The interior is intact and the color plates present nicely, but the endpapers and the first/last few blank leaves show significant age-toning and water-staining/foxing (see photos). The text pages and plates themselves are clean and bright. Binding is solid. Sold as-is in good vintage condition for its age.
A handsome reference and display piece for collectors of religious art, antique illustrated books, or anyone who loves classic Bible paintings.
