The Kobyz is one of the oldest bowed instruments of Central Asia. Its form has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Carved from a single piece of wood and fitted with natural horsehair strings, it produces a raw, textured tone rich in overtones.

It does not resemble violin, cello or erhu. The Kobyz has its own unique voice - darker, atmospheric and deeply resonant.

Used by composers and sound designers in ethnic, cinematic and ambient music. Also explored in psychoacoustic and meditative sound work.
