From 1912, the first appearance in Portuguese of any part of Karl Marx's magnum opus, Das Kapital. This faithful distillation of the first volume of Marx's three-volume work was originally set down in French by Gabriel Deville in 1883; worldwide it became perhaps the most influential introduction to Marxist thought ever written. This translation by de Moraes preceded the translation of the complete Das Kapital into Portuguese by more than fifty years.
The book appeared in both softcover and hardcover versions, with identical texts. This first edition copy was rebound some time in the mid 20th century; it lacks the original covers, so it not possible to determine which version this originally was.
The covers show minor wear, mostly at the corners; the binding is strong; vintage owner signature on the first page; the text is toned with age and has a slight musty odor, otherwise in fine shape.
Extremely rare: the Communist party in Portugal was violently suppressed in the 1930s and much of its literature destroyed, so few copies of O Capital have survived. At present there are just two other copies available online, both listing for about $4,000.00
