Fun Fact: Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced SOW-in), celebrated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, the UK, and northern France to mark the end of summer and start of winter. Celts believed the boundary between the living and dead blurred on October 31, leading them to wear costumes and light bonfires to ward off spirits.

This item is a German Scherenschnitt, or in German, (silhouette paper cutting)-hand cut. The postcard was created by artist Marta Sachse-Schubert. The scene depicts musicians playing instruments under a tree with owls. It's not an accident that the trunk of the tree, in silhouette, has the shape of a witch. The cards text "Hand geschnitten" indicates it was hand-cut. The phrase "ES MUSS AUCH SOLCHE KAUZE GEBEN" translates to "There must also be such characters" (or "oddballs"). The translated caption reads, (There must be such oddballs, too.", in German. Such detailed silhouettes were popular for their artistic intricacy and decorative charm. Based upon my research, the German stamp is valued between 3$ and 5$.
