Colonel Niven was born in Scotland and educated at Edinburgh University where he took an MA (1st Class Honours) degree in geography. On graduating, he joined the Brigade of Gurkhas. He commanded the Gurkha Independent Parachute Company from 1970 to 1972 and then his own Regiment, the 10th (Princess Mary’s Own) Gurkha Rifles in Hong Kong from 1975 to 1977. He is currently commanding the Gurkha Contingent of the Singapore Police Force, an appointment he took up in 1981.

In 1970 he led the joint British and Nepalese Army Expedition that climbed Annapurna I in West Nepal. At that time, it was the highest mountain ever to have been climbed by any service expedition anywhere in the world. All his free time is spent on treks to Nepal to visit friends in high mountain villages and to photograph the land and its people. During the cold monsoon period of 1961-62 he made a journey of some 1,800 miles across Nepal from east to west. His book, 'THE MOUNTAIN KINGDOM. Portraits of Nepal and the Gurkhas.' was first published in 1987.

He served with the Special Air Service for 6 years, first between 1972 and 1975, and then between 1978 and 1981.
