Opera Glasses or Racing Binoculars In Leather Case

For Your Collection of Opera Glasses or to Go to the Opera or the Show

Details

  • Description: Nice antique Opera Glasses or Race Binoculars marked "S. O. M. C. New York". The entire piece is made of black colored brass with the body being covered with leather. The glasses come in a leather case line in blue silky material. The case has a leather handle and a brass locking mechanism. The case is marked on the inside "Colmans Fabiricant Paris J. S. C." Trade Mark with the letter c within a star. Although the case may not have originally been with the glasses, we are selling them together since this is the way we acquired them. We are selling the binoculars and the case as found. They are truly antiques from the 1800s and the glasses look very nice and feel great in your hand. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Circa 19th century.

  • Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

  • Size: The eye pieces are ~ 1 1/16" in diameter on top. The binoculars are 3 1/2" wide where your eyes would go, ~4" wide at the other end, and are ~2 3/4" long when fully extended. The case itself measures ~4 1/2" by ~2 1/2" by ~2". The glasses and the case together weigh about 7.5 ounces.

  • Maker: Uncertain could be S. O. M. C. New York, but this could be the shop that sold them and the maker may be "Colmans Fabiricant Paris J. S. C." but this would require additional research which we did not do.

  • Marks: On the glasses it is marked ""S. O. M. C. New York" while the inside of the case is marked "Colmans Fabiricant Paris J. S. C." Trade Mark with the letter c within a star.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice old piece with honest wear from years of use.

  • Condition: The optics are good and the binoculars work well. The focus wheel is in good working condition. The binoculars are dusty and dirty and could use a good cleaning. The leather on the body of the piece has quite a bit of wear from use, but no loses. The leather is tight and well attached to the piece. The case has wear, it has lost the shaft out of one of the hinges (see the first photo) and the exterior has quite a bit of wear, but is still all there and shows no significant breaks. The inside of the case has some loose portions of the lining, has loses, has wear to the writing on the inside of the lid and losses, and is soiled but still all there. The latching mechanism is still all there and works albeit a bit awkwardly. Both the leather case and the binocular appear to not have started their life together but came together at a later date, so we are selling them as found. Be that as it may, the piece is still nice and functional. Please view photos for additional condition information.

  • In Closing: Please see photos to appreciate the beauty and condition of this piece. This is truly a nice antique, which would make a great addition to your opera glasses collection.
