These signs are miniature copies of highway billboard signs which Silver Springs posted along the highways leading to Ocala, Florida in the 1950’s.  These signs closely resemble and are the same size as Lionel Trains postwar billboard signs.  They will fit into postwar and modern versions of No. 310 billboard frames.  They are sometimes found with Lionel train sets from the 1950’s because Silver Springs also obtained a customer mailing list from Lionel and mailed out the signs to owners of Lionel trains.

As the largest users of highway billboards in the South (second only to Coca Cola) the placement of Silver Spring billboards were included in Lionel 310 billboard sets from 1950-53. These Lionel produced 3"x 5" O gauge 310 billboards were identified by the name "Standard" at the bottom of each. Silver Springs produced its own Lionel-size billboards identified by the name "Outdoor Adv" at the bottom of each and distributed by mail to a larger audience of model railroad enthusiasts.

Beginning on December 10, 1952, Florida's Silver Springs announced its annual commitment to provide complimentary miniature billboards (a.k.a. blotters) to Lionel enthusiasts by the end of each year.  The backs are ink blotters because Silver Springs gave them to restaurants and motels on the highways leading to Ocala.  Many customers back in those days paid for their food and lodging by writing a check with a fountain pen so the blotters served a very useful purpose at the check-out counter.

Silver Springs also produced an identical HO version of its billboards.  These approximately 2.75" x 1.75" billboards are slightly taller than Lionel's 0310 billboards.
