A deep fog of forgetfulness covers the land. Axl and Beatrice have grown old in their underground village and have forgotten much of the life they have shared. Now, they must come up into the light and find their son who waits far away across a turbulent landscape. Their dangerous quest is filled with unexpected encounters, including to Sir Wistan, a Saxon warrior tasked with killing the she-dragon Querig, and the legendary knight Sir Gawain, still loyal to the long dead King Arthur. Inspired by the rich imagery of Arthurian legend, Ishiguro weaves together myriad influences from across the literary spectrum, from Beowulf to Don Quixote to Tolkien, to create something entirely unique – a tale soaked in myth that asks questions about war, memory and justice that have never been more pertinent. Fully illustrated for the first time with seven colour illustrations and four black-and-white images by artist Jana Heidersdorf, this Folio edition also features an introduction by writer and playwright Daniel Kehlmann, who describes reading The Buried Giant as a ‘profound experience’.
