Warhaffte abcontrafehtung der machtigen und vesten Statt Alkair - a striking and extremely rare, original antique hand-coloured woodcut engraved map / bird's eye view of Alkair - Cairo, Egypt, published by Sebastian Munster in his Cosmographia, German edition, in Basel, in 1578. The map is a double page from an atlas, visible foxing in margins, the map itself is in very good condition with attractive and highly elaborate hand-colouring throughout. The original colours remain rich, bright and appealing (colours are more vivid on the map compare to photos, especially reds, blues and greens), German text to verso, as shown. The map depicts Cairo during the Ottoman Turkish Era in remarkable detail. The Nile River shown at the bottom of the map, oriented to the east, with several sailing boats along its course. The right side of the map features pyramids and ancient ruins. The city itself is rendered with exquisite detail, showing narrow streets, dense clusters of buildings, gardens, and fields outside the city. People in colourful clothing are depicted working, trading, departing for battle, and riding horses and camels. It measures approximately 17 x 14 1/2 inches or 44 x 36.5 cm, will be dispatched rolled in a postal tube.
