A hardy perennial, tall growing (2-3m) chocolate scented  (flowers late summer, faintly scented like drinking chocolate powder) plant of the sunflower family, dies back to ground over winter, returns in spring in a larger clump from under ground spreading stems, choose planting site with care, can spread over several years, tall growth can over shadow surrounding plants.

For best results a thick clump producing many flowers: grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun, but can survive with minimum care once fully established. Sunflowers generally need a long hot summer to flower well. May need support in high winds, mulch annually with compost or manure, and divide every 3-4 years to maintain vigour.
