This is a vintage Lionel 636W Union Pacific "City of Portland" M-10005 Streamliner O-Gauge set from the mid-1930s. This four-unit consist includes the power car, two coaches, and the observation car.
Unique History & Custom Modifications: This set features a fascinating example of "folk engineering" to keep the train running long after original parts were unavailable.
The Conversion: A previous owner modified the articulated system to use four custom-constructed wooden additions (one on each unit). These were designed to allow the cars to run on "regular" standard trucks instead of the original articulated vestibule trucks. One original vestibule plate is still present.
Structural Notes: To accommodate these wood pieces, the metal ledge at the bottom of the car bodies has been notched. This was done to provide a secure attachment point for the wooden frames.
Completeness: To make this specific setup functional, you will need to source one additional "regular" truck, as one is currently missing.
Trim & Finish: The set was repainted in silver and black many years ago. One Union Pacific side badge and the original whistle are missing. The finish shows heavy patina, flaking, and surface oxidation.
Structural & Mechanical Condition:
Castings: Despite the notches at the base, the main die-cast metal is solid. Most importantly, the nose and front skirting of the power car are intact with no cracks or breaks.
Motor: The original motor is removed and included separately (untested). The wiring has significant insulation rot and requires replacement. One coupler has exposed copper windings. I have turned the wheels by hand to verify that the motor turns freely - the motor, gears, and wheels appear to move as they should. Note the missing wheel.
Sold strictly as-is for parts or restoration. A unique piece of rail history for a collector who appreciates custom vintage repairs.
