This is a 150 year old antique Japanese suzuribako from the mid Meiiji Era (c. 1880). This suzuribako (portable calligraphy tansu) is made of zelkova keyaki (keyaki) wood exterior and pine interiors and has a nice configuration of three drawers with a lidded top section.
Suzuribako were used as portable accounting chests (the forerunner of the attache' case). Also known as a calligraphy chest as it housed an ink stone, brushes, ink stick, and paper. keyaki (zelkova) was the wood of choice being strong with a beautiful grain. This chest still has its original century and a half year old kijiro lacquer finish.
The method of construction (all wooden pin construction - see pictures 8 & 9) as well as the square forged iron handles on this chest dates it to the mid Meiji Era (c. 1880) or even earlier. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials, as well as, money and valuables. The lidded top section was used for the storage and use of suzuri (ink stone) with brushes (not included). The lidded top swings open to reveal the area where the ink stone was once housed (see pictures 13).
The lidded top opens by pushing a side button (see pictures 7) and closes securely when the lid is closed . The top handle is still very secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 4). All drawers open and close smoothly. The triple hinged lidded top swings open and closes easily.
This Suzuribako chest measures 7 1/4" wide by 7 1/2 '' tall by 11" deep (18 x 19 x 28). A very warm accent for your home or office.
