This exceptional figure has no equivalent in the literature on African Art, so the identification is based on stylistic parallels. Its purpose is unknown and perhaps undocumented. The Senufo have a wide range of objects that were associated with the men's Poro secret society. An additional factor leading to an identification among the Senufo is the shape of the head, which is shown as a bird's head and beak. For the Senufo, the bird plays an important role during initiations, planting ceremonies, and funerals. The figure itself raises several questions that will be answered in time; meanwhile, it will serve as a challenge when added to a collection.
Provenance: Matter Collection
From the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
