While the origins of the Bidjogo remain largely unknown, their language establishes a connection with the current inhabitants of the coastal mainland. Historical records indicate that mainland populations related to the Bidyogo once extended significantly north along the coast, reaching present-day Mauritania. However, due to southward movements by the Amazigh, these mainland peoples gradually shifted south. The earliest written references to the Bissagos Islands and their inhabitants date back to 1456, noted by Portuguese explorer Alvise da Cadamosto during his travels. In the 17th century, the islands served as a port for ships involved in the slave trade. By the late 19th century, the archipelago became part of Portuguese Guinea through colonization.

These little masks are often repainted before ceremonies.
