THE CITY OF MAN: A Declaration on World Democracy

Published in 1940, this is a hopeful call for sanity and freedom in the midst of a world in upheaval and rising totalitarianism. Seventeen leading writers and thinkers, such as Thomas Mann, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Dorothy Canfield Fisher, joined together to create this declaration. 

American social philosopher and historian Lewis Mumford was also one of the seventeen, and he has signed this copy on the first page and dated it in 1941. An extremely rare signature: Mumford never did public signings of his works, and the only autographed copies of any of his books were gifts to friends and family.   

There were only two small printings of The City of Man, and the book itself is very uncommon. This copy is from the second printing, and it remains in very good condition for its age. The jacket shows some dust and minor material loss at the corners, as seen in the photos. The book itself has a closed tear to one page (photo #6), otherwise only minor signs of age or use. 

A rare and remarkable book, made especially valuable by Mumford's signature.
