John Potter Wheat (1920-1980) was a versatile American artist known for his diverse body of work, ranging from watercolors and oils to acrylics and lithographs. He transitioned from a focus on landscapes to a unique blend of realism and surrealism, often using a palette knife. Wheat's commitment to historical accuracy in his murals and depictions of historical events earned him recognition and placement in museums such as the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, and The Butler Institute of American Art. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, creating art for the Department of Strategic Services. Wheat's artistic journey took him from New York City to various locations, including San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he spent his final years.
