・Why Commerce Flourished in Hiroshima

1. A Strategic Hub in Inland Sea Transportation (Location)

Hiroshima faced the Seto Inland Sea, which was a vital maritime route during the Edo period.

It served as a relay point connecting western Japan (Kyushu and the Chūgoku region) with Osaka

Maritime shipping (coastal trade) was highly developed

Goods such as salt, rice, timber, and paper were gathered and distributed

👉 In short, Hiroshima functioned as a major logistics hub.

2. Development as a Castle Town

Hiroshima was established as a castle town by Mōri Terumoto, and later developed under Fukushima Masanori and Asano Nagaakira.

It attracted samurai, artisans, and merchants

The population grew as it became the administrative center of the domain

Markets, wholesalers, and merchant districts were established

👉 As a political center, it naturally became a place where people and money gathered.

3. Economic Policies of the Hiroshima Domain

The Hiroshima Domain actively promoted commerce.

Collection and distribution of tax rice

Protection and encouragement of merchant activities

Promotion of local industries such as paper, timber, and salt

👉 The domain’s pro-commerce policies significantly contributed to economic growth.

4. A Water-Based Transportation City

Hiroshima developed on the delta of the Ōta River, with an extensive network of waterways.

Goods could be transported throughout the city by boat

Warehouses and storehouses were concentrated along rivers

The city functioned effectively as a port

👉 Its structure as a “city of water” enabled highly efficient logistics.

5. A Core City in the Seto Inland Sea Economic Sphere

During the Edo period, the Seto Inland Sea region was one of Japan’s most important economic zones.

Strong connections with other port towns such as Onomichi and Shimonoseki

Active interregional trade

Goods from western Japan passed through Hiroshima

👉 Hiroshima functioned as a central node in the regional economy.

Conclusion

Hiroshima became a commercial center during the Edo period due to:

Its strategic location along major maritime routes

Population concentration as a castle town

Pro-commerce policies of the domain

A city structure well-suited for water transportation

These factors combined to create a city where people, goods, and capital naturally converged.
