A handsome and eye appealing oak coffer with a panelled top, probably made in Westmorland. It has the unusual feature of an entire row of apotropeic marks along the front edge, each one very slightly different. Lovely deep carved

flutes adorn the frieze and unusual lozenges on the front with four fleur-de-lys motifs on each angle. The central stile with good deep guilloche like detailing. Each side has a deeply carved rail, below which are carved central paterae with a concentric incised surrounding border. The wrought iron pin hinges are original, and the interior with a charming old metal corner strap.The lock and hasp are not original.

This chest has been well cared for during its life time and is in very good original condition, commensurate with age, use and as per images.
