IT IS IN THAT MUNICIPALITY WHERE THE LACHINE RAPIDS AND NUN'S ISLAND, A HUNTER'S PARADISE, THAT THE ART AND TRADITION OF QUEBEC CARVERS STARTED DURING THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE 20TH CENTURY. AMONGST THE BEST CARVERS ONE WILL FIND BILL COOPER, JOSEPH AND ROBERT A PAQUETTE, TONY MALETTE, FERNAND TURCOTTE, PAUL LORRAINE, JIM TOMNEY, BOB WATERHOUSE AND MANY MORE (1)."

BORN IN 1888, JOSEPH PAQUETTE CARVED HIS FIRST DECOYS AROUND 1906 WHILE LIVING ON RUE SAINT-LOUIS IN LUCHINE. ACCORDING TO ST-ONGE'S SCULPTEURS D'APPELANTS DU QUEBEC "FOR MANY, HE WOULD BE CONSIDERED THE FATHER OF VERDUN'S STYLE. THE FIRST CALLERS (DECOYS) ATTRIBUTED TO HIM ARLEADY PRESENT DETAILED SCULPTURE OF THE FEATHER OF THE WINGS, A TYPICAL ELEMENT OF THE REGION (2)." BELISLE AND ST-ONGE SHARED THAT "...PAQUETTE CAME UP WITH A DIFFERENT SOLUTION FOR THE CHOPPY WATER BY CARVING A FINELY DETAILED TAIL THAT COULD CLEAVE THROUGH THE WAVES VERY EASILY(1)."
