Ethiopian Coptic Painted Drum

Traditional Ethiopian Coptic painted drum, hand-crafted from stretched animal hide over a hollowed wooden body. This type of drum, known as a kebero, plays an important role in the liturgical and ceremonial life of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The drum is richly decorated with hand-painted religious imagery in the distinctive Ethiopian iconographic style—characterized by bold outlining, expressive almond-shaped eyes, and vibrant natural pigments. Such imagery often depicts saints, angels, the Virgin Mary, or Christ, reinforcing the drum’s sacred function within worship. In Ethiopian Orthodox practice, painted drums are used during religious festivals, processions, and church services, where rhythm and chant form an integral part of devotional expression.
