This Australian Army issued DPCU wide-brim sun hat, often referred to as the “battle sombrero,” was trialled in the late 80s/90s and again in the late 2000s to provide greater sun protection than the standard bush hat.

The design proved unpopular, the wide, stiffened brim would interfere with equipment and was prone to losing its shape the design to Australians was also associated with small school children, many units never adopted it or moved away from its use in favour of the standard bush hat.

While third party wide brimmed hats are available commercially genuine issued examples are somewhat rare because the hat looked stupid so they were just thrown away torn up by soldiers for scrimming
