Tomb of the Mutilated is the third album from Buffalo, New York’s Cannibal Corpse and is widely regarded as the peak of their classic Chris Barnes era. Released September 22, 1992 on Metal Blade Records, it was recorded and mixed at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida from June 1 to June 15, 1992, produced and engineered entirely by Scott Burns, and mastered at Fuller Sound in Miami. This is the album that gave the world “Hammer Smashed Face” — which later appeared in the 1994 Jim Carrey film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, exposing Cannibal Corpse to a mainstream audience that had no idea what hit them. “I Cum Blood” was subsequently featured in Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned.
This is also the final album featuring the original founding lineup with guitarist Bob Rusay, who was fired following the sessions. In a well-documented footnote, Scott Burns had Rusay perform no rhythm guitar tracks during recording, with Jack Owen covering the bulk of the guitar work. The booklet includes a notable disclaimer confirming that no electronic harmonizer or vocal enhancement of any kind was used on Barnes’ vocals — a pointed statement about the authenticity of his performance.
Cover artwork by Vincent Locke. This is the original uncensored US pressing featuring Locke’s infamous cover depicting two corpses engaged in a sexual act — the version banned in Germany until 2006 and pulled from retail in multiple markets. Loudwire ranked it the 24th best extreme metal album of all time in 2015. Stereogum called it the third-best Cannibal Corpse album, saying “all 10,000 of its riffs are fucking perfect.”
