A rare, antique copper engraving of Market Place, Holyhead, Anglesey by Samuel Sparrow 1786. It was actually engraved earlier in 1769 and shows the market place, or cross, and the ancient rude gate leading into the church yard.

Samuel Turner Sparrow (fl. 1770-1806) of Clerkenwell, London, was a prolific engraver of landscapes and architectural scenes after his fellow artists, portrait engravings also exist.

The engraving appears in the eight volume edition written by Francis Grose (1731-1791) the son of a Swiss jeweller born in London entitled 'The Antiquities of England and Wales' published 1783-c1787. This example is likely a plate removed from that. Its rather rare and a single copy is held by the National Library of Wales.

Dimensions are 12.5" x 14.25" overall with actual size of image 5" x 6.5". There are no condition issues.

A rare item, nicely set in a swept giltwood frame with linen slip and ready to hang with new cord and coppered hooks applied verso.

Moved house recently and I no longer have the room to hang the artwork I have collected over the last 40+ years.

It can comfortably go via Royal Mail Small Packet Rate - at cost - I charge nothing for the box and fill. It will be well wrapped up in lots of bubble and come in a strong box. But, happy to deliver for free within a 20 mile radius of Newtown, Powys.
