This is a vintage Chinese gilt wood relief panel displayed inside a handmade wooden shadowbox-style case. The carving appears to depict a multi‑figure procession or court scene with horses, attendants, and architectural elements. The carving itself is detailed and substantial, carved in deep relief and finished in gold coloring. Panels with this level of depth and multi‑figure detail typically required many hours of skilled hand‑carving. Carving (inside): approx. 16" L × 12" W × 2¼" D, Interior of display case: approx. 20" L × 16" W × 2½" D, Case wall thickness: approx. ¾", Exterior of display case: approx. 21 7/16" L x 17 1/2" W x 3 1/4" D, Total weight (carving + case): approx. 12 lb. 9 oz. The display case appears to be handmade, not factory-produced. The hinges are uneven, the stain is not uniform, and the wood surface has rough areas. The carving is mounted very securely inside the case. There are no visible screws, nails, or brackets, and the carving sits tightly against the backing. Because of this, I was unable to remove it safely to inspect the back. It may be glued or blocked in place. The carving itself shows no visible damage from the front. The back of the carving cannot be inspected due to the secure mounting. I didn't want to pull on the fixture for fear of breaking it. The wooden case has wear, including: A crack in the wood frame near bottom of door on the hinge side, a chip on one edge, scratches and scuffs on the wood, scratches on the glass, a crack on the inside of the glass door. On the back of the display case is a wire attached to two brackets for hanging the entire display, that has nothing to do with the fixture inside. The case is included as shown, but it should be considered handmade and imperfect. This is what people did in the 1960s–1980s when they bought loose Chinese gilt panels and wanted to display them safely. This listing includes the complete display with the mounted carving.
