Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846–1916) was an Italian composer best known for his elegant salon songs and art songs that became staples of late 19th- and early 20th-century vocal repertoire. Born in Ortona, Italy, he studied at the Naples Conservatory and later settled in London, where he achieved international fame. Tosti served as singing master to the British Royal Family and was appointed Professor of Singing to the Royal Academy of Music. In 1908 he was knighted by King Edward VII. He composed hundreds of songs, including well-known pieces such as “Ideale,” “Serenata,” and “Good-bye.” His lyrical style, graceful melodies, and refined accompaniment made him one of the most performed song composers of his era. He died in Rome in 1916, leaving a lasting legacy in the tradition of Italian art song.
