Yamaha SPX 90 Series 2

The Yamaha SPX90 II is a refined version of the original SPX90, released in 1986, offering enhanced capabilities while retaining the iconic sound that made its predecessor a staple in studios and live sound.  Its primary upgrade is increased maximum delay time from 0.5 seconds to 2 seconds, significantly expanding its creative potential for echo and loop effects.  The SPX90 II also features expanded parameter ranges and improved control over effects like reverb, modulation, and pitch change, making it more versatile than the original.

Key features include:

Reverb: Four distinct programs (including "Ambience") for lifelike acoustic spaces.

Modulation: Professional effects like Symphonic Chorus, Stereo Flange, and Vibrato—famously used by artists like Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, and Steve Vai.

Freeze: Records up to 2 seconds of audio for playback at any pitch, ideal for creating ambient textures.

MIDI control: Allows program changes and automation via MIDI, with optional RC7 remote.

Dual-channel delay and echo: Independent settings for left and right channels for complex stereo effects.

Despite its age, the SPX90 II remains highly valued for its unique 80s/90s digital character, particularly its "Symphonic" chorus and natural-sounding reverb, which are still sought after for ambient and vintage-style production.  It’s often considered a bargain compared to more expensive units like the Eventide H3000 or Lexicon PCM, making it a popular choice among collectors and producers looking for authentic analog-digital hybrid tones.
