HINTS ON ORNAMENTAL GARDENING

From 1823, an extremely rare volume by British architect and landscape designer John Buonarotti Papworth, intended as a companion volume to his earlier Rural Residences. The book is particularly noted for its 28 hand-colored, full-page plates illustrating lavish garden designs for the country homes of wealthy Britons.

Hints on Ornamental Gardening rarely appears on the market. In January 2021 a copy sold in a Christie's auction for $2,750.00.

This copy remains in very good shape after two centuries. The covers are original, although the spine and endpapers were replaced sometime in the early 1900s. The covers show minor general handling, no serious flaws. The binding is good, although one color plate has come loose and three more are semi-detached. The text is otherwise in very good shape, minor occasional foxing and other signs of age and handling but no noteworthy defects.

In all a very presentable copy at an unusually low price.

Measures 7.75" X 11.5", 110 + ii pages plus the 28 plates. Ships promptly & securely.
