HELL-BENT FER HEAVEN

The best-known work by Southern playwright Hatcher Hughes, this spirited drama set in the Carolina mountains was first performed on Broadway in 1923. It won the Pulitzer Prize the next year and was filmed in 1926.

The copy for sale is from the true 1924 first edition, first printing. This is one of the few copies sold before the Pulitzer was awarded; most copies were sold with a Pulitzer announcement label permanently affixed to the front panel of the dustjacket.

The book remains in good shape for its 100 years. The jacket has a fair amount of handling, including dust, toning, foxing, some short tears, and a little material loss at the spine ends. There are also two longer tears at the seams, closed with non-yellowing tape on the reverse. Still a decent jacket for its age and looks nice in its mylar sleeve. The book itself is in fine condition, with toning to the text but otherwise minimal signs of age or use.

Certainly a presentable copy of a rare true first, at an unusually low price.
