MEMOIR ON THE RUINS OF BABYLON and SECOND MEMOIR ON BABYLON

From 1815, the first detailed description of the ruins of ancient Babylon ever written for an English-speaking audience. The author was a British diplomat and amateur archeologist who conducted some of the original excavations on the site. The Memoir is here bound together with Rich's 1818 follow-up volume. Both of these short, illustrated texts are first editions, first printings.

The binding is contemporary, and the book remains in good shape. The binding is weak and has been reinforced with heavy, clear tape along the spine. Aside from the obvious flaw and a small owner signature on the first page, the book shows general age and use but no loose pages, writing, tears, or other significant defects.

Extremely rare in any condition. 

Measures 6.25" X 9.75". The first volume is iv + 67 pages plus 3 plates; the second volume is ii + 58 pages plus 3 folding plates.
