ABOUT:
This illustrated rare book is the 1st Chinese translation of Armenian folk epic "David of Sassoun". It was publishes in China, in 1957
David of Sassoun [Sasun] is an Armenian oral folk epic with ancient roots. It describes in four cycles the heroes/daredevils of the district of Sasun to the southwest of Lake Van, and their pursuit of national liberation against foreign tyrants. This Chinese translation was made by Huo Yingren (Beijing, 1957) from the Armenian Jubilee edition of 1939 (In May 1939, Armenia celebrated the Millennium Jubilee of the epic Sasuntsi Davit). The official version of the epic, referred to as the “Jubilee Edition,” was published in Yerevan in 1939. The 1939 edition was a standardized, popular version compiled by academics in Soviet Armenia for a wider audience, which served as the source text for many subsequent translations into other languages. Many translations were made of the 1939 "Jubilee Edition" (or collated text) of the David of Sassoun epic, including into Russian and Chinese (this edition).
