This rare medal was issued in honor of the Palmach Unit, the elite fighting force of the Haganah which was the underground army of the Jewish community in the period of British Mandate Palestine.
The Palmach (acronym for Plugot Machatz, "strike force") was the regular fighting force of the Haganah and was established on May 15, 1941. By the outbreak of the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, it consisted of three fighting brigades and auxiliary aerial, naval and intelligence units.
Obverse:
Obverse depicts the Palmach's emblem and inscription in Hebrew "פלמ"ח" (Palmach) below the emblem.
Reverse:
On reverse the "Hagana" emblem with its motto on left ("With one hand he undertook handiwork and with the other he held a weapon" - from Nehemia 4/11).
