Monopusher chronographs — those in which a single button (sometimes integrated into the crown) controls the start, stop, and reset functions — were the predominant form of early wrist chronographs (and earlier, pocket chronographs) from around the 1910s to the early 1930s. With the introduction of the dual-pusher system (one for start/stop and another for reset) in the early 1930s, the monopusher design ceased to be the standard, although many watchmakers continued to produce it as a luxury or special-edition variation.
Manufactures such as Longines, Minerva, Breitling, and early Valjoux-equipped brands developed and refined monopusher chronographs during this formative period. The design remains highly valued among collectors today for its mechanical simplicity, historical significance, and its foundational role in the evolution of modern chronograph technology.
This Paul Breton Monopusher Chronograph from the 1920s is a fine example of early Swiss chronograph craftsmanship. Built during the vintage era of precision timing, it reflects the technical ingenuity and elegant design typical of that period.
The watch is powered by a manual-winding movement with 13 jewels and features a central chronograph seconds-hand, a 30-minute counter, and a 12-hour totalizer. This configuration allows for accurate timekeeping and reliable chronograph functionality.
The white enamel dial is neatly decorated with black Arabic numerals and clear minute and chronograph tracks. Sub-dials are positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock, creating a balanced and legible display. The solid 52mm round case, made of base metal, is smoothly finished, featuring a snap double-hinged cuvette for protection and easy access to the movement.
Fully inspected and confirmed authentic, this vintage Paul Breton timepiece remains in good condition, showing some wear consistent with its age. A collectible example of early Swiss chronograph design and mechanical precision.
