Dom Bernard de Montfaucon, O.S.B. was a French Benedictine monk of the Congregation of Saint Maur. He
was an astute scholar who founded the discipline of palaeography, as
well as being an editor of works of the Fathers of the Church. He is regarded as one of the founders of the modern discipline of archaeology.
We
have 13 volumes of this set. The complete set is 15 Volumes.
Unfortunately our set is not complete. In the interest of getting as
many of these volumes out to folks who will appreciate them, We're
listing each volume individually. If you are interested in buying the
entire set, please message me, We'd be happy to work out a deeply
discounted deal.
Below are some condition notes that apply
to all volumes. Certain volumes have condition or damage that needs to
be explicitly noted. I will note those issues right here:
Damage to the head and foot of the spine. Some small chunks of leather missing. Lots of scuffs. Cracks developing on the outer hinges.
The rest of
the condition notes that apply to all volumes are as follows.
*All
bindings are currently intact. Boards are not detached. Every volume
has some degree of cracking to the leather along the outer hinges, some
of this cracking is more pronounced than others. While photographing
the plates inside the book we carefully handled the boards and did not
open the books all the way in order to prevent more cracking. None of
the boards are super bad and about to fall off but we highly recommend
handling these with care and not opening the front covers all the way.
*Leather
on the covers has a beautiful patina. Some of the leather has scuffed
areas, scuffs small cracks and other imperfections. Each volume has a
bookplate on the free end-paper. Some of the volumes are missing tiny
chunks of leather on the head or foot of the spine (some more than
others, we will note this and illustrate it with photos whenever
possible).
*A few of the illustrations have tiny pieces of
tape or roughness on the page as some of these were used for art design
reference. I have taken photos and mentioned that issue for every
volume to which it applies.
*The books are square and not cocked to one side.
*ABSOLUTELY
NO OLD BOOK SMELL (these were kept in a climate controlled private
library that had no direct sunlight. No pets were allowed in the
house).
*There are some small spots or marks and
imperfections on some of the pages here. I don't see anything that
resembles "foxing".
*As these are extremely large volumes,
Some of the pages are not completely flat and show some level of
unevenness or slight disfigurement.
*We have a small handful
of volumes that have sustained some degree of water damage. When this
is the case, it will be explicitly noted up above ad every effort to
accurately illustrate the extent of the damage through pictures will be
taken.
*Seeing as these are from 1722, some of the leather,
especially the leather on the spine, has started to degrade, Little
flaps, scraps or chunks of leather may be loose and "just hanging on".
You should be aware of this while enjoying your book fresh out of the
package. We will wrap the books first in paper and then in lots of
bubble wrap. Please take care when unwrapping the paper, Due to the
condition of the books, some small particles or pieces of leather may
fall off of the spine.
*I took way more
photos of each of these volumes than could fit in any one of these
listings, if there is a particular aspect of the books you want more
photos of, Specific page, construction of book, Leather, illustrations,
ect, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ASK! I want to make sure you are 100%.
Summary and Final Thoughts
While
these books do have a host of condition issues, The gorgeous copper plate engraved illustrations are beautifully preserved(with a very few exceptions,
which will be noted and photographed), they remain vibrant and a real
feast for the mind. Although the leather is quite old and some cracking
is developing, the fact that these massive tomes are still structurally
intact is a testament to the caretakers and previous owners of this
set. Remember, These were expertly preserved in the library of a very
serious book collector from Los Angeles. No Pets, No Smoke, Humidity
actively monitored and adjusted, No Direct Sunlight. Only My time
photographing and perusing these books has been an immense privilege. I
think there is quite a bit of value in these books. I've thoroughly researched the sales history of the various editions of these books and have priced them realistically and aggressively. I would love for someone who appreciates this sort of thing as much as me to have this and treasure it, so If you'd like to make an offer please do. I hope you enjoy
this one volume or the entire set! - Jeremy Horton *Rare books manager
