Bemerkungen
Bibliotheksexemplar mit Prägestempel, ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar / library copy with embossed stampa good and clean copy - The Elizabethan age is here seen through the eyes of one of the most prominent scholars of that period. William Camden, an official of Queen Elizabeth’s court, a confidant of her great minister Lord Burghley, and a founder of the Society of Antiquaries, wrote this History as a monument to the achievements of the queen and her government. -- Camden’s aim was to present the political, economic, and social events of his time in the plainest, most lucid style possible. He was confident that the bare facts would command the admiration of his readers. Further, he had a concept of the role of the historian that was unique among his contemporaries. He self-consciously set out to detach himself as writer from the history he was writing. "Mine own judgment I have not delivered according to prejudice or affectation; whilst writing with an undistempered and even mind; I have rather sifted out the sense and opinion of others; and scarcely have I anywhere interposed mine own, no, not by the bye, since it is a question whether an historian may lawfully do it,” Camden writes in his preface. -- Yet Camden’s approach may well be the most fascinating part of his work. "There is in his commitment to the Elizabethan establishment a certain weariness, a certain lack of enthusiasm and warmth, something of the slightly embittered, slightly cynical resignation to a world of grim but inescapable political fact which one sometimes senses in Burghley and his royal mistress. There is in Camden certainly a sense that the achievements of the regime were hard won and fragile, and the struggle for order a never-ending one. There is nothing of the overdramatic view subsequently held of the Elizabethan age - as an era of constructive beginnings, a harbinger of permanent progress to come,” Wallace MacCaffrey states in his introduction.
