The FED cameras were a series of 35mm rangefinder cameras produced in the Soviet Union from the mid-1930s, originally conceived as close copies of the Leica II. Manufactured by the FED factory in Kharkiv, these cameras replicated the Leica’s mechanical design, including the separate rangefinder and viewfinder windows, collapsible Industar lens mount compatible with the M39 screw thread, and the cloth focal-plane shutter offering speeds typically from 1/500s to 1s plus Bulb.
Early FED models were almost mechanically identical to the pre-war Leicas, using brass construction and precision machining to achieve similar handling and optical alignment. Later versions evolved independently, introducing refinements in shutter mechanisms, film advance, and viewfinder magnification, while maintaining the Leica-style layout.
FED cameras became the foundation of Soviet rangefinder design, combining solid mechanical engineering with compatibility with Leica-thread lenses. Their production played a major role in spreading 35mm rangefinder photography across Eastern Europe, marking the USSR’s first successful domestic implementation of a high-precision optical camera system inspired by Western innovation.
