OBJECT// Antique Chinese very rare and fine museum quality Ming Dynasty gilt bronze hat rank finial ornament, this magnificent object possibly depicts Guan yu or the guardian of the west surrounded by four other figures/disciples to make a total of five, each figure is carefully depicted in ornate military attire, the piece is highly complex and well made with excellent attention to the details, if the top figure is indeed Guan yu the four other figures may be symbolic representations of military power over all territory to the four points, North, South, East & West, clearly this was intended to be worn by a high ranking military official. The piece is made of cast bronze with remains of gold gilt to the surface and weighs 68 grams in total, ive sold numerous hat finials over many years but ive never seen this style of subject or age, really a rarity and worthy of academic study, to me its a important Chinese historical object. Dating from the 17th century, Ming Dynasty object. Superb colour and patina, serious collectors object.
