Violet (Viola) Queen Charlotte are beautiful scented hardy perennials, the plants survive UK winters and come back each year in increasing clumps. They are popular as highly scented cut flowers for very small vases. Sow seeds in a cool greenhouse or coldframe. Violets are fairly easy to grow from seed and they are a Spring flowering. They will be happy planted in a sunny or semi shade position in your garden. The pretty flowers are edible and can be crystalised for cake decoration. Traditionally violets were used in India medicinally, for treating sore throats and tonsillitis. They were also used by the ancient Greeks to make herbal remedies. Violets are said to be a symbol of everlasting love. Easy plants to care for, but water in dry weather. Remove dead flowers to avoid self seeding. Height (approx) 15-30cms (6-12ins).

Sowing Seeds: Sow Outdoors January to March also can be sown October to December
Outdoors October to March - Sow seeds in cell module trays of well drained fine moist seed compost. Cover seeds only lightly with compost or vermiculite. Place the trays in a coldframe or unheated greenhouse. Keep soil moist but not soaked. Please note germination can be slow and cold is necessary for germination, seeds will remain dormant waiting for colder weather. When seedlings are large enough to handle they can be potted on into 9cm pots. When the plants are a good size they can be planted in the garden, but first acclimatise them to outdoor temperatures for a week or so before planting out. Space plants 25cm apart.
