A native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Miguel Descartes Batista Jerez was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1988, and reached the Major Leagues in 1992 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Between 1995 and 2000, Batista pitched for the Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals. Statistically his best years were with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 and 2002. Batista pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings against the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the 2001 World Series. He subsequently pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, again for the Diamondbacks (in 2006), then for the Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.
