This sale is for a vintage hardback edition entitled “The Living Thoughts of Tolstoi,” presented by Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) with a woodcut frontispiece portrait by “M”.

 

It was published by Cassell and Company, Limited, of London, in 1945 and is the third edition in the publisher’s The Living Thoughts Library.

 

The introductory essay by Stefan Zweig was translated into English by Barrows Mussey, and the selections from Leo Tolstoy’s works were translated into English by Nathan Haskell Dole.

 

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) - commonly referred to as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer, novelist, dramatist, essayist, and philosopher.  He was arguably the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family.

 

As a writer of fiction, Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his epic “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”, depicting Russian life in the nineteenth century.

 

The book measures 7.6 inches x 5.25 inches and has 124 pages. 

 

The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with minor wear and is a little faded to the original cloth hardback cover, and some foxing near the covers/rims. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.  There is no dust-jacket.
