Hunting Sword c1780 used through US Civil War as Confederate Shord Sword
An improvised Confederate weapon with deep historic roots and undeniable character.
Originally crafted as a European hunting sword circa 1780, this heavy-bladed piece was later repurposed as a Confederate short sword during the U.S. Civil War. Featuring a rugged antler (bone) grip and robust construction, it embodies the Southern tradition of adapting heirloom arms during wartime shortages.
The absence of a scabbard reinforces its utilitarian battlefield role—likely carried by a soldier out of familial necessity. At 32 inches in length, this weapon was likely wielded in close combat, and shows honest wear consistent with Confederate use. A gritty, storied relic that captures the essence of Southern improvisation in wartime.
